Custom-tailored solutions

SMART Railway also offers customized converters suitable for applications other than standard. Together with the customer, experienced development engineers select the ideal power electronics solution. Thus, it is possible to elaborate a custom-tailored solution within a very short time.

An example would be the replacement of traction converters by IGBT power elements. This was the case with 19 diesel electric two-car trainsets type VTA of the commuter train operator AKN in Kaltenkirchen, Germany, originally equipped with traction converters based on bipolar transistors. Since the latter are hardly available as spare parts, anymore, AKN decided to replace the proven traction converters with IGBT power elements made by SMA Railway - today operating under SMART Railway. The design of the new power elements is compatible with the installation and function of the old transistors. All other components such as container, cooling system, filters as well as software and control system remained unchanged.
